College football QB battles 2024: Iowa, Washington, Oregon State settle depth charts as Week 1 approaches (2024)

Quarterback battles are often the most fascinating part of the college football offseason. Especially in an era where the transfer portal and the promise of immediate playtime elsewhere have made it extremely difficult to have a solid succession plan in place.

Though coaches would love to have things settled well before the actual season starts, quarterback competitions often stretch deep into the fall. Some are still ongoing when the actual games kick off as teams will use early season tune-up contests to see if one signal caller can pull ahead of the other in a live setting.

Now, entering the last week of fall camp for a majority of schools around the nation, plenty of prominent programs have decided on a quarterback. Ohio State, Nebraska, Iowa, Washington andWisconsinare just some of the programs that have identified their offensive leaders as each tries to make a big impact in the Big Ten.

Elsewhere, College Football Playoff competitor Boise State went with a rather surprising decision for its quarterback. The Broncos were one of many Group of Five schools that decided to go with a more experienced option over exciting new transfer portal additions.

There's still a lot to be settled, but here's a rundown of the quarterback battles that have been decided as the 2024 season nears.

Ohio State

It wasn't necessarily a surprise, but Ohio State officially turned to Kansas State transfer Will Howard to guide its offense. Howard did have to surpass some stiff competition, primarily from returning backup Devin Brown and fellow transfer addition Julian Sayin (Alabama), but it's been rather apparent from Day 1 that Ohio State brought Howard in to win the quarterback job.

Now that it's official, Howard brings an interesting dimension to Ohio State's offense. He may not be the prolific passer that we've grown used to donning the scarlet and grey, but he does bring the physicality that Ryan Day has desired from his team in recent years.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Howard is a hard-nosed runner who's difficult to tackle when he gets a head of steam. He rushed for 921 yards and 19 touchdowns with the Wildcats and should fit what new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly wants to do offensively very well.

USC

USC named Miller Moss its starting quarterback following a lengthy battle that bled into preseason camp. Moss served as Caleb Williams' backup during the last two seasons and made his lone start in the 2023 Holiday Bowl against Louisville, where he set a bowl record with six touchdown passes as part of a 372-yard day in the 42-28 victory.

Moss was viewed as the heavy favorite to succeed the former Heisman Trophy winner and beat out UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava, who joined the Trojans after originally committing to Georgia out of the portal. Maiava passed for 3,085 yards with 17 touchdowns during his true freshmen campaign for the Rebels.

Iowa

Cade McNamara is back. The former Michigan transfer was listed as QB1 on Iowa's team depth chart, released Monday, as the Hawkeyes turn their eyes towards Saturday's season opener against Illinois State.

McNamara, who fended off Northwestern transfer Brendan Sullivan, started the first five games of the 2023 season for Iowa before an ACL tear cut his year short. In that span, he completed 61% of his passes for 505 yards and four touchdowns to three interceptions.

Kansas

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels will get the start in the Jayhawks' Aug. 29 season opener against Lindenwood, Jayhwaks coach Lance Leipold announced Tuesday. Daniels missed a majority of the 2023 season, including the first game of the year, due to lingering back tightness.

Though naming Daniels the starter isn't a surprise, it is notable that he's set to return. When healthy, he is one of the top quarterbacks in college football. But nagging injuries have lingered throughout his career.

He only played in three games through the first third of the season in 2023 before shutting things down the rest of the year. In that span, he led Kansas to a 3-0 record while completing almost 75% of his passes for 705 yards and five touchdowns.

South Carolina

The LaNorris Sellers era is underway in Columbia. After hinting at as much during the spring, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer officially named Sellars the starting quarterback Tuesday, bringing the competition between him and Robby Ashford to an end.

While Sellers is short on experience -- he attempted just four passes as a true freshman in 2023 -- he is one of the SEC's most intriguing players at the position. His 6-foot-3 and 242-pound frame certainly stands out and his high school tape shows a livewire arm just waiting to be released.

Nebraska

Former five-star recruitDylan Raiola won the Nebraska starting quarterback job after entering camp as the heavy favorite. The Cornhuskers are seeking their first bowl game berth since 2016, and the 6-foot-3 signal-caller has all the goods to take the program to new heights in Year 2 of the Matt Rhule era.

Originally committed to Georgia, Raiola flipped his commitment in December and dazzled through spring practice. His top competitor for the job was junior Heinrich Haarberg, who played in 10 games for the Cornhuskers last season.

Duke

Former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy was named Duke's starting quarterback on Monday. Murphy will replace Riley Leonard, who transferred this offseason to Notre Dame. Murphy made two starts last season for the Longhorns in Quinn Ewers' absence and threw for 477 yards and three touchdowns.

Murphy was viewed as a high-upside addition for first-year coach Manny Diaz because of his prolific arm strength. The Southern California native was a top-200 player coming out of high school in the 247Sports rankings and was the 40th-ranked transfer available.

Wisconsin

Tyler Van Dyke once looked like the next big thing in college football before injuries and inconsistency set him back a bit at Miami. So he decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal and take his talents to Wisconsin where the hope is that offensive coordinator Phil Longo -- prolific for his high-flying offenses -- can revitalize Van Dyke's career a bit.

Van Dyke will have the chance to make a splash in the Big Ten after beating Braedyn Locke, who started three games for the Badgers last season, for the starting quarterback job. Some stability could benefit Van Dyke after he played for three different offensive coordinators in three years at Miami.

Washington

It's Mississippi State transfer Will Rogers that will step into one of the biggest vacancies in college football. The new Huskies starter has to replace Heisman Trophy finalist and 2024 NFL Draft first-round pick Michael Penix Jr.

Rogers has had a lengthy and prolific college career of his own. He flourished at Mississippi State under former coach Mike Leach, setting the SEC record for completions with 1,301 and program records with 12,315 career yards and 94 career touchdowns passing. His production dropped off a bit during an injury-riddled 2023 campaign with Zach Arnett in charge, but he's still one of the most proven arms at this level.

SMU

SMU coach Rhett Lashlee revealed Tuesday that incumbent starter Preston Stone will retain his spot atop the depth chart for Saturday's season opener against Nevada. Stone played in a majority of the Mustangs' games in 2023 before a late-season leg injury cut his year short.

Stone was one of the American Athletic Conference's top quarterbacks prior to his injury, as he completed 206 passes for 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns. But Lashlee also said that Kevin Jennings, Stone's replacement who had 618 yards and five touchdowns passing, will also play against the Wolf Pack.

Arizona State

Michigan State transfer Sam Leavitt will enter the 2024 season as Arizona State's starting quarterback, according to ESPN. Leavitt won out against fellow transfer Jeff Sims, who had starting experience from Nebraska and Georgia Tech, and Trenton Bourguet, a five-game starter for the Sun Devils last season.

Leavitt brings the most upside among ASU's options. The former four-star prospect out of West Linn, Oregon, played sparingly as a true freshman at Michigan State but completed a respectable 15 of his 23 pass attempts for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Baylor

Baylor's offense has a chance to be really exciting again. The Bears are expected to name Toledo transfer DeQuan Finn as their starting quarterback, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, giving new offensive coordinator Jake Spavital one of the Big 12's most exciting options at the position.

Finn, who has been competing with junior Sawyer Robertson, was the 2023 MAC MVP at Toledo after amassing 3,220 total yards and 29 touchdowns, seven of which came on the ground. He's a threat to hurt defenses through multiple areas of the game and should be a fun watch as he makes the jump in competition.

Oregon State

Oregon State enters a new era with Idaho transfer Gevani McCoy running its offense. The former FCS star will be the second straight transfer to start at quarterback for the Beavers, following in the footsteps of DJ Uiagalelei.

McCoy was a 2023 Walter Payton Award finalist -- given to the top offensive player at the FCS level -- after throwing for 2,910 yards and 15 touchdowns and running for another 188 yards and two touchdowns. He was also the 2022 Jerry Rice Award winner as the top freshman in the FCS.

Virginia

Virginia's offense should be fun to watch. The Cavaliers are rolling the dice on potential and starting sophom*ore Anthony Colandrea over Tony Muskett, who previously entered the 2023 season atop Virginia's depth chart.

Colandrea saw a good bit of playing time last season as Muskett dealt with various injuries and set program records for a freshman quarterback with 2,183 total yards of offense and 154 completions. His 1,958 yards passing also ranked first among power-conference freshmen. Colandrea did throw nine interceptions, but his boom-or-bust play style should at least bring some energy to UVa's offense.

Cincinnati

The Bearcats are expected to name Brendan Sorsby as its starting quarterback, sources tell Matt Zenitz of 247Sports and CBS Sports. Sorsby is a transfer from Indiana who started seven games for the Hoosiers in 2023, throwing for 19 touchdowns to five interceptions. The redshirt sophom*ore should provide a boost to a passing game that was woeful last season (Emory Jones threw for just over 2,000 yards and averaged 6.9 yards per attempt). Life after Desmond Ridder has been up and down for the Bearcats. Sorsby will be their third QB to open a season since Ridder moved on to the NFL (Ben Bryant threw for 2,700 yards and 21 TDs in 2022).

Boise State

One of the first genuine surprises of the offseason, Maddux Madsen was named Boise State's starting quarterback over former five-star prospect Malachi Nelson. Most assumed that the job was Nelson's when he committed to the Broncos after leaving USC, but Madsen had a strong spring and fall entering his third year in Boise.

Madsen did play plenty as a redshirt freshman last season, completing 81 passes for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns. In his first (and only, so far) career start against New Mexico, he logged 202 yards and two touchdowns passing with no turnovers.

Still, Nelson is at least one of the nation's most intriguing backups. He was the No. 13 overall prospect and No. 5 quarterback in the class of 2023. Not a bad hand to turn to in a pinch.

San Diego State

San Diego State enters the Sean Lewis era with a true freshman behind center, as the Aztecs are turning to 2024 signee Danny O'Neil to orchestrate the offense. O'Neil outlasted Florida State transfer AJ Duffy, a former four-star prospect in the Class of 2022, to earn the honor.

O'Neil is at least familiar with Lewis. The 6-foot signal caller out of Indianapolis, Indiana, was once committed to Colorado, where Lewis was the offensive coordinator on Deion Sanders' inaugural staff in 2023.

East Carolina

In a battle of the transfers, former Miami and Missouri quarterback Jake Garcia beat former Michigan State quarterback Katin Houser to earn the starting job at East Carolina. Got to love the situations that arise in modern college football.

Garcia didn't play at Missouri last year but he does bring some starting experience from two seasons at Miami. He threw for 859 yards and seven touchdowns from 2021-22, with most of his work coming in 2022 as Van Dyke dealt with injuries.

Nevada

There seems to be a trend among Mountain West schools where incumbents are beating the flashy new Power Four quarterback transfers. Brendon Lewis, a former Colorado transfer in his own right who started 10 games for the Wolfpack in 2023, held off Nebraska transfer Chubba Purdy to retain his spot atop the depth chart.

Lewis isn't the best passer -- he had just 1,313 yards and two touchdowns to six interceptions last season -- but he is a dynamic threat who can impact the game with his legs. He finished second among Nevada's rushers last season with 495 yards and four touchdowns.

Southern Miss

Southern Miss is expected to start Florida State transfer Tate Rodemaker in its 2024 season opener against Kentucky, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz. Rodemaker joined the Golden Eagles after four seasons at Florida State, where he started one game last season after Jordan Travis went out with injury.

He led the Seminoles to win against Florida despite suffering a late-game injury of his own. Rodemaker threw for a career-high 510 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Kent State

Kent State had a rotating door at quarterback last season as it went 1-11, so the hope is that new starter Devin Kargman can at least provide some stability. He edged out Tommy Ulatowski, who had three starts and finished second on the team in passing in 2023.

Kargman was first off the bench in Kent State's season finale against Northern Illinois and had arguably the best performance among Kent State's quarterbacks all year, completing 16 of his 28 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

Akron

Akron tabbed journeyman Ben Finley as its starting quarterback ahead of the Zips' Week 1 showdown on the road against Ohio State. The former Cal and NC State quarterback made two starts this past season for the Bears and passed for 572 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Zips are coming off an abysmal 2-10 season in which the program averaged 197.6 yards per game through the air, which ranked No. 97 out of 130 FBS programs.

UL-Monroe

Welcome to the limelight, General Booty. The Oklahoma transfer is set to be named UL-Monroe's starting quarterback, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz.

A former junior college prospect, Booty is a familiar name for college football fans -- even if he has yet to attempt a pass at the FBS level. He spent two years at Oklahoma, where he appeared in one game each from 2022-23 while playing behind Dillon Gabriel.
